Carlos, we did a serious discussion on the topic of vintage kallitypes,
when? Someone with a good read-mail tool can tell you the exact date, but
it was within the last year and ran for about a week. The topic began with
questions of kallitype archivality, then segued to the fact that vintage
kallitypes are VERY rare. Since we know that the process was popular early
this century, this was most likely either because a.) they all
faded away, or b.) they are all being passed off as platinum prints.
A discussion of non-destructive tests for platinum vs. kallitype followed.
Mike Ware put out a query both on this list and the hist. photog. list
asking for citations of confirmed vintage kallitypes. As I recall, he only
received one or two within that period. But you might ask him now
(mike@mikeware.demon.co.uk) and see if he has any further info. I should
add, BTW, that his argyrotype was designed in part as response to archival
problems of both VDB and kallitype,
Cheers,
Judy
