Standard precautions for using dichromates in colleges here in the US is just
a pair of latex gloves, and a cheap dust mask if you expect to be powdering
it finely rather than using the crystals straight out of the bottle.

Unfortunately the MSDS for many compounds are sufficiently alarmist that it
can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between water and dioxin.

The college I was taking my chem classes at was in the process of trying to
cut down the amount of dichromate used not because of the immediate exposure
hazard, but because of the cost of the hazwaste disposal procedure they were
required to go through for anything that had been in a student's test
tube..;)
