I am sorry Peter, but it does. At least with some developers.
If you are not careful with the silver replenishment of the developer, =
you have inconsistent results, Jeffrey.D.Mathias@worldnet.att.net (density loss and uneven development). =
Again it may not happen as easily with one developer as with another.
Of course you have to replace developers in due time. The question is =
not *if* but *when*. And when may not be apparent until you have ruined =
a print.
I finished reading your "Variations in the Kallitype Process".
You raise several very important points:
1. Thompson and other kallitype printers of his time might have solved =
most of the kallitype problems. I agree and I am working very hard to =
prove it.
On the other hand they also created a lot of problems.
Thompson had two major objectives:
1.1. To make Kallitypes that would look like platinum prints.=20
1.2. To create Kallitype formulas that would allow for print out =
kallitypes.
Thompson and his fellows printed with day light, and this was a major =
concern because printing times were extremely variable.=20
As far as I have been able to test also a major source of problems and =
instability.=20
We do not need this as most of us use UV lamps to print and have access =
to densitometers.
2. Di-sodium orthofosfate is a very important component of all my =
kallitype developers, and very often overlooked.
3. I make my ferric oxalate, with ammonia and I have no fading problems =
at all.
4. Many of Thompson formulas included silver salts both in the =
sensitiser and developer. Metal salts if only present in the developer =
do not penetrate paper fibers so easily.
Am I glad we are talking Kallitypes.
Now I have to try your Satista formula!!!
