UV Lighting

I'm looking at building an inexpensive UV lightsource (I know, just walk
outside at noon), and I want to get some opinions from people.

I've seen black light bulbs and black light fluorescent tubes and I know
I could pony something up quickly from these. I've heard I should mount
some sort of fan on a unit like this for cooling. I've also heard
someone talk recently about some sort of vapor lamp (sodium, mercury?).

I was also at this recycling place on Sunday and they had what looked
like an outdoor floodlight. I couldn't find anything that said what
type of bulb it took, but the bulb in it had a socket diameter of about
1.5 inches, widest diameter of about 4-5 inches, was a frosted white
color, and was somewhat oval shaped except on top the glass formed this
knob, about the diameter of the socket, and about 1 inch high. It
looked like regular filaments inside, but I don't know what this is.
The reflector it was housed in said 120volts on the back and that was
about it. If that particular bulb is not sodium vapor, or mercury vapor
(or whatever the hell I recently heard bandied about on this list),
might the reflector be used for one of these type bulbs if I go buy one.

I know this might be hard to "diagnose", but if anyone knows anything,
let me know. I could probably pick the thing up for $10.
