Not for sharpness as much as for cheapness. Good quality paper was always
expensive and for decades in America, had to be imported from Europe.

Another factor is that albumen prints were meant to be mounted so why go
for a thick paper that would cause more curl on the carte-de-visite and
other cards, or album pages?
