I used to use FX-1 a lot a few years ago and it really is a superb
developer. Rather similar to the Beutler developer but with better contrast
control. I don't quite know what Anchell means by 'soot and chalk' tonal
scale. What that means to me is a contrasty negative, which is NOT what you
get with FX-1. I can only assume he means that it gives a long tonal range
with detail right through from shadows to highlights (which it does).
FX-2 is a similar developer but claims to give an 80% speed increase. The
formula is:
Metol 2.5 grams
Sodium sulphite, anhydrous 3.5 grams
Glycin 0.75 gram
Potassium carbonate, crystals 7.5 grams
Pinacrypton Yellow, 1:2000 solution 3.5 ml
Water to 1 litre
Development times as for FX-1.
I have never used this version, so I can't vouch for the results.
Hope this helps,
Derek
