Your negative should have a rage of between 18 and 21 steps or even
slight;y more if your solution contains more palladium than platinum. Pure
Pt at 17 or 18 and 25 % Pt at 21 or more.

Soaking allows the solution to sink into the paper thus causing a barrier
of paper fibres to obtrude between the solution and the surface of the
paper. This degrades the image. This comment is objective and is based
upon practical experience. I think that it is best to experiment with
various papers yourself to decide which combination gives you the best
results according to your aesthetic and personality and way of working. One
lesson to learn in alternative processes is that you should never believe
anything that you read or that anybody tells you without checking it
against other sources and your own experience. That probably has wider
application.
