Dear APIS 98'ers :

I again post the 'planned for' schedule along with some additional
information to inform you of the situation at present.

I wish to repeat that my new personal computer, for unknown reasons, has

not been working. Many messages received have been lost along w/much
personal material.

At present I am in California teaching a class in San Francisco and will

return to Lisbon the 2nd week of April.

The facilities for our APIS 98 are in the city of Poto in northern
Portugal and are the home of the Potuguese Center for Photography. They
have very graciously embraced our group and our interests and, in a
sense, wish to be hosts. They will provde a lot of staf to do the
organization and do such things as meet us at the airport, make sure the

facilities are ready.
Their building is refurbished medieval prison, with plenty of space to
sit and talk and to disply work in smaller groups.
They will provide the place to meet, make sure that a good and not too
expensive hotel is booked and also provide bus transportation and
(hopefully at this moment) free passes for the group interested in
attending the World Fair in Lisbon.

All of us must realize how much work this takes and how costly such
advance booking can be. We truly need some indication of your interest
in attending this year's event.

TO THIS DATE WE HAVE HAD ONL:Y TEN (10) PEOPLE CONFIRMING THEY WILL BE
COMING.

The Portuguese Center for Photography is a government orgaization and
must ask for permission to obtain fund to put this event on. This is why

it is so critical to have a good idea of who and how many people will
attend.

Again, the plans, as have been stated, are as follows :

BELOW IS THE PLANNED FOR AGENDA AND INFORMATION

1. Dates for the symposium are July 16 through 19 as previously
indicated.

2. Estimated cost for the event will be USD $175. per person, and
there is enough space to accommodate 300 participants.

3. There is also space to hold several workshops at the same time.

4. Hotel reservations and special hotel rates will be negotiated by
the Centro Portugues dae Fotografia, the government department that
runs the Portuguese National Photographic Archives and museum. They
will sponsor the event.

5. Transportation to and from the hotel will be provided if
necessary.
There will be a welcome desk at the airport and a trip to the world
fair is being planned for the last day.

Suggested program: (please offer ideas participation)
Day 1 - HISTORICAL PROCESSES
Morning - Theoretical Presentations
Afternoon - Technical Workshops

Day 2 - NEW ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES (new Argyrotype,
Ziatype, etc.)
Morning - Theoretical presentations
Afternoon - Continued Technical Workshops

Day 3 - DIGITAL PROCESSES
Morning - Theoretical Presentations
Afternoon - Equipment Demonstration

Day 4 - Trip to Lisbon and visit to the World Fair … busses
provided and, (hopefully) tickets to the fair.

At the same time we are attempting to hold three exhibits at the same

location, and possibly an exhibit based on the Portuguese Historical
Collection.
Program at this stage is still malleable and suggestions are welcome.
Centro Portugues de Fotogarfia is a government run institution that
manages the National Archives, the National Collection and a new
exhibit, conference and workshop center built after the complete
remodeling of an old medieval prison. This is a huge space and the
architectural work done to renovate is quite remarkable. They have
agreed to sponsor the event, providing space, funds and P.R.
support.

THIS ABOVE INFORMATION WAS SENT TO THE LIST

as noted, only 10

replies have been received

I hope you will note that the plans are to look at the processes we all
love, in an historical manner, to also view new interpretations of these

processes … and to also investigate aspects of the digital possibilities

as they relate to making negatives and prints.

Again, if people on this list do not confirm their intent to attend by
April 15, we will not be able to make this event a reality.

If you do confirm, a cheque (refundable if the event does not take
place) must be sent in to make your intent sincere.

MAKE YOUR INTENTION TO ATTEND BY EMAILING THIS ADDRESS

IN ADDITIONAL MAIL A CHQUE FOR US$175 … PAYABLE TO : APIS 98
