I finally got to thumb through a copy of Michael Hammel's new book:

   Hammell, Michael, The Artists' Guide to the GIMP, ISBN: 1578310113, SSC
   Publishing, 1998.

I haven't had a chance to really read it yet, but what I saw looked pretty
good. Evidently neither Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com carries it yet
though. I finally located it at ComputerLiteracy.com
