Darryl,
The Jobo "bathtub" combines temperature control through a water bath
with the rotary agitation (with variable speed) and tempered storage for
a bunch of chemical bottles (think E-6, what it was really designed
for). Further, Jobo "Expert Drums" are a unique design, like the
cylinder of a revolver, that gives extremely smooth and even
development. So there is a real difference. But, that said, you can do
just fine developing in trays too.
