I recommend the opposite to my students... uneven development, film streaks,
edge density buildup are always the result of incomplete and uneven
agitation! The usual cause is not leaving a pocket of air over the film and
being TOO gentle in agitating the film....Try this experiment: Fill a clean
peanutbutter jar with water all the way to the top, put one drop of food color
and close the lid (no air). Try to agitate the food color into the
solution... use any method you want... even the "coctail shake" method is
useless. Now leave a pocket of air and notice the immediate difference. The
argument was never between advocates of gentle figure 8 agitation and the
"cocktail shakers" but whether there really is effective and complete
dispersion of the developer in a consistent manner during the whole
development time.
