Actually in the book of the Stieglitz/O'Keefe extended portrait work
published a decade or so ago and referenced in the recent bio, O'Keefe's
introduction talked a bit about Stieglitz' frustration with "brown"
prints and the loss of "black" platinum materials during WWI. Nothing to
do with snobbery, just esthetic preference. I find it amusing that lots
of current workers strive to imitate the brown palladium prints of
Strand and Stieglitz when both photographers would at the time much
rather have been printing black, not brown.---Carl
