I don't use densitometry to check my prints. Or negatives for that
matter. Plain eyesight is more useful. Once in a while I'll borrow a
densitometer to put numbers on a magazine article. Since I almost never
use dmax within the image area of a picture, I don't pay much attention
to dmax but rather concentrate on the liveliness of tonal separation in
the near-black deep tones. That's what makes a print sing, or croak.
