Well, a shadow is the lack of anything to reflect so nothing really
"relects darkness".

That is correct.

You need to position the dag so that the shadow areas reflect the incident
light away from you making these areas appear dark. The highlight areas
are those that reflect the light to your eyes and hence appear bright.

Of course with a dag you can also position the image so that the shadow
areas reflect the light to you and the highlight areas reflect the light
away. That gives you the negative image.
