I have a similar problem with scanning panoramic negs (59x24mm
approx) in a standard 35mm scanner. Typically I have a couple of
roughly 15Mb files to join

I've tried various stitching software and have yet to find
anything that does the job as reliably and well as manual
stitching. It's generally faster too.
