This does not answer your question but the fixer for VDB discribed in
Keepers of Light is too strong and also the fixing time is too long.
Try 20 gm in 1000 ml and fix for two minutes max.

If you want to experiment, you might try even smaller amount s of sodium
thiosulfate and increase the wash time. You might not get as
much color change that way. Another thing you could try is ammonium
thiosulfate.
