One problem in modern marketing seems to be not a question of actual
numbers, but rather of percentages. There may be quite a few people,
worldwide, that would purely love to use Super XX, but it's not a big
enough share of the market for somelike like Kodak to devote much time or
energy to it. They can make more money marketing something that appeals to
more people. It's not that they couldn't make a buck at it - but their
stockholders might complain that they weren't making enough!
I wouldn't be at all surprised if there weren't more people using carbon
printing (or any alt process) than there ever were in times past. There
are a hell of a lot more people in general! But the fraction of the total
is still much smaller, because - there are just a hell of a lot more people.
The internet and the WWW may make it possible to serve and profit from
niche markets in ways that were impossible before, but before that becomes
clear there's a lot of shaking out that will have to happen in the way the
internet is used.
