I think another factor of the hardener is how long the size lasts -- ie,
how many coats & soaks you can do without having to resize. This of course
is impossible to measure (I find), I also think it depends on the paper.
With a hard paper, the dichromate could be tanning it at the same time the
gelatin washes off.... and maybe you don't have to resize at all. On the
other hand, it would seem that some folks resize after each coat. I'm
wondering what your findings with the alum are... Does the size seem very
long-lasting?
