One very important reason that I became involved in alternative processes
was the handcrafted apsect of it. I know that making a silver print still
involved hand work, but when you mix your own sensitizer, and coat your own
paper, it adds another level of artisitic craft and control to the process.
I feel that I own my alternative work more than my silver/mainstream/factory
work. At a time when photography is moving more away from handmade prints,
it just feels more correct for me as an artist. Plus I am fascinated by
photography from 100 years ago, their subjects and style and the people and
the world of that time.
