Re: ballasts

Bob,

I have built both:
1) a light table from individual ballasts and individual
bulb holders, and
2) a UV printer using standard complete, pre-assembled light
fixtures.

The pre-assembled units were far cheaper. I think I paid
$10 or $20 each for the ballasts in the light table. Right
now the local discount building materials store has 4', two
tube florescent fixtures on sale for $8 each! If you get
the right type you can set them close enough together that
it is hard to change bulbs.

If you decide to use individual ballasts then make sure that
you have something metallic running the full length of the
bulbs. Evidently the metal casing of the pre-assembled
fixtures sets up a magnetic field which helps the bulbs get
started. I had to add strips of aluminum foil behind the
bulbs in my light table.
