There are dozens of classic silver formulas available - all the 
"Historical" type photo books and most general alt photo books have 
formulas for "salted paper" which are just silver emulsions. I personally 
use a classic formula of ammonium chloride and gelatin to soak the paper, 
then when dry, apply silver nitrate. It's that easy, and the results can be 
great. In fact, if you use a gold solution (fancy "toners" aren't 
necessary) after a short wash and before fixing, the image is quite permanent.
