Bob Mitchell, a writer for one of the photo magazines, invented and marketed (a long time ago, but not on the market now AFAIK) a grain focuser for just this circumstance: it was about 2 feet tall, and rested on a point rather than a stable base. I don't recall what it was called other than that it was the "Mitchell _______ grain focuser." You could probably, with some electronic legwork, find a used one to buy.
