We recently hosted a digital Output seminar at SVA that touched on this
subject. According to Henry Wilhelm, this is dependent upon the choice of inks
and paper stock. Currently there can be some color degradation in as little as
3 months. However, this does not become a noticeable
change for about 9 months. New ink technology has advanced this appreciably
and we are starting to see inks coming from Epson and other sources such as
Luminos, that are as stable as RA4 prints. Not too shabby! Of course these new
inks will be at a premium price for a while. It should be noted that when
switching to certain archival inks, you have to first flush the lines with a
set of cleaners. After the printer has been flushed, new inks can be
installed. Are we having fun yet?
