Judy,

I've kept home-made SG emulsion in perfect condition for over 3 years, with
5 ml 2% thymol per litre (it actually improves for the first couple of
years). Maybe, therefore, less thymol is better than more, but I also kept
it refrigerated. At room temp the life is much shorter, depending on
temperature. The emulsion would also have contained more than 3% gelatin
(8-10%, as I recall), and protecting it from light is another possible
factor.

On my recent trip to Ireland, I saw the head of Saint Oliver Plunket at a
church in Drogheda. It was creosoted in the 19th. century, as an emergency
measure to deal with an infestation of insects, but the guide book says it
is now protected with something called lindane. Anyone ever hear of it?

Liam
