Friend who reports above also reports on Dr. Dain Tasker's X-rays of
plants and flowers, done in the 30's & 40's, recently closed at Howard
Greenberg Gallery, NYC. Mostly 8x10, "they looked like platinum prints,
but very fine-grained, with extreme detail... They are quite unusual and
very delicate reinterpretations of otherwise well-known subjects." I
myself don't know the name, which perhaps others on the list do.
Presumably they will come around again in some way, shape or form.
I can however recommend the Steichen show at Whitney Museum from personal
experience. The early pictorialist work, *especially* the gums and gum
over platinum, are sublime. The later celebrity portraits are wonderfully
wonderful also. But Stieglitz was right about the fashion photography --
not that it was commercial, but that it wasn't at all wonderful. If it
weren't "Steichen" I doubt would be in a museum show. The paintings, at
least those shown, were purely bad. (Meanwhile, Alt-Zagat says don't have
lunch downstairs at Sara Beth: prices doubled since last visit, cuisine
remains ordinaire.)
