Honest folks, Brahma is a real person and not me with a more interesting
name. There are maybe 20 or 30 copies of #1 still available, but now, I
hope you understand, only with subscriptions -- to make complete sets
available as long as possible... I'll send you that info offlist...

Aha ! As explained in P-F #1, your best best is the Stouffer 21-step
tablet, T-2115... Firstly, it's only $5.40 (with discount for bulk orders
to schools, to about $3 each) -- so you can have a dozen or two & run a
bunch of tests at one time (& no tragedy if you get a spot of emulsion on
one). Secondly, T-2115 has numbers on the steps, which some of the others
don't. Not only are those numbers essential overall, the resolution &
clarity with which they print are important diagnostically.

Then, if you have a new pigment & want to try it in a bunch of different
mixes and/or papers, etc., you can do all at one time - tape the strips to
a thin plastic and stick all together under the light. For gum, which
doesn't get agitated, just drop them one by one into a big tray of water &
let sit the designated time, with an occasional jostle. But for film,
where it's important for all to have same agitation, I stick in a
home-made multiplex clip (illustrated P-F #2) and develop a bunch of
strips as one.

Stouffer, by the way, is <www.Stouffer.net>, 219/234-5023, fax
219/232-7989.

The more expensive step guides come individually calibrated, which
accounts for (at least some of) the higher price. But our hand-applied
emulsions are never 100% identical anyway -- and for the difference in
price you can practically buy a densitometer.
