For alt photo purposes, the two compounds can be used in exactly the same
way. There is even confusion when photo suppliers label the stuff. In fact,
most of the bisulfite on the market is actually the metabisulfite. So
(according to the Merck Index) "for all practical purposes the
metabisulfite possesses the same properties as the true bisulfite."
Interchangeable.
