I've read everyone's suggestions and have decided that my problem was the 
adding all chemicals after one another, without waiting for each to dissolve. 
 The full amount of sulfite was added before the Metol was dissolved.  I 
realize the addition of a tiny bit of sulfite was not to help the dissolution 
of Metol, but prevent oxidation.
