I have done a considerable amount of gum printing over Van Dyke as well as
kallitype. Even when printing multiple layers of gum, I have never
experienced any changes in the contrast, tone, or overall density of the
underlying silver. Actually, my biggest problem with this approach is
producing an acceptable Van Dyke or Kallitype on paper that must also be
accepting of gum. In order to produce a registered print, pre-shrinking is
necessary, which alters the paper's effectiveness for the Van Dyke or
kallitype. I'd be interested in hearing what paper and what paper
preparation other people use when print gum over Van Dyke, or for that
matter, gum over platinum, kallitype, Argyrotype, salt, etc...

Subject: Van Dyke & Gum

While we're on the subject of overprinting van dykes...

Anyone experimented with gum on top of vdb? I did one print and it came out
a little murky. Looks like the gum changed the vdb's tone - lowering the
contrast and lightening it up. Not what I was going for...

I think it would be nice to make a print that combined the sharpness of
vdb's and the texture and tonal flexibility of gums. Any thoughts?
