Darryl--Thanks for your elucidation of the "picturesque." Could you post a
short bibliography of recommended reading for those of us trying to sort
all this out? I am in the middle of writing a paper about landscape
photography in the West in the 19th century (O'Sullivan, Jackson, Watkins)
and i think this "picturesque" thing might have some bearing on it, since
it involves landscape, landscape painting, photography, and the way those
things all influenced each other in the circular way you described.
