There were two major Glass plate based technologies. Wet plate and dry
plate. Wet plate was using collodion and dry plate was using gelatin
emulsion. Since you can not get gelatin coated glass plates it might be best
to tape 4X5 film to a piece of dark glass and use your plate holder and
camera in this fashion.

You could also use Albumen Dry plate. Exposures of 30 sec or so. No one is
doing this process( always dangerous to say on this list) so you doing this
process would re-awaken something that is close to being gone.

Wet plate is fun , but complicated and you do not have a correct plate
holder I suspect. What you have could be used as such though.

..I tried to check the archives for a definition of the term to see
..if my posting would be appropriate without luck, so here goes:
..
..I recently received a Scovill Waterbury field camera (ca. 1885)
..as a birthday gift (from my in-laws!) which used 5 x 8 inch(not 5
..x 7)glass plates. I want to use it to actually take pictures.
..The "film" was so slow that the lens cap was the shutter. Has
..anyone worked with glass plates? If so what would be the easiest
..process to use for a novice?
..
..I have considered fashioning a 5x8 film holder and using ortho
..litho film available in 8x10 sheets. Dilute Dektol can be used
..to yield continuous tones. I realize this is silver chemistry,
..but the the effective film speed would be in th 19th Century
..range (an ISO of 1/2 according to the supplier, Freestyle Photo)
..
..Any commnets?
