I was considering one of these myself a few weeks ago, and I found a good
explanation of the different kinds, and considerations that go into buying
digital cameras, in the Consumer Reports Buying Guide. This is sort of a
digest they put out once a year, and you can find condensed reviews of all
sorts of products. They have it at the public library here.
