I seem to have missed the first part of this discussion but since I'm
the one who suggested sulfuric acid for someone's obnoxious green stain
I'll jump into the middle of it.
Sodium bisulfite (potassium bisulfite, potassium metabisulfite) can
clear gum to a point, but as more and more of the dichromate changes to
a reduced state, the product becomes more and more insoluble, to the
point that something stronger is required. At the point that the various
-ites are no longer effective against the "stain" the 1% sulfuric acid
is recommended (Nadeau, Peter Frederick, etc) for removal. Hope that
helps "clear" things up.
