Actually Jeffrey, I've never done surgery and don't know the fine points
of scalpels -- although I've noticed that sometimes a 25-cent razor blade
does a job better than a $30 specialty knife. On the other hand, I do know
the fine points of smoothing gum, or many of them.

I thought you were using a hake brush, which is the only "tool" that
smooths gum coating satisfactorily, or certainly the best, in my
experience, of course. The cheap shedders smooth just as nicely as the $40
versions, they just shed about it. A "sable" brush does not (in my
experience of course) smooth as efficiently, nor does anything else I've
tried.

Which results? The lecture? It's neither necessary nor indicated. I mean a
person could hesitate to ask you a question.
