Keith,
There's a whole third group to be included, not just the division between
those who want it all figured out before making the exposure vs. those who
let the negative speak to them and lead on in new directions. There's also a
group who start with a concept or idea and then assemble a subject to be
photographed. It can be as basic as an arranged still-life or as elaborated
as Joel-Peter Witkin.
Then there are blends of the above. If I get a really sucessful picture of,
say, a white cinder-block building, I become aware of the possibility of
finding more of them, or may even go out searching for them. The first is a
found subject, but perhaps after that the rest in the series should be
considered concept-driven.
