Christina, was that line about "alt ego" you being wickedly pun-acious or
just one of those gifts of the keyboard? Either way, it's excellent: a
collection, or maybe a column: "Alt Ego." (You said it first, but if you
don't want it....)

I think Alberto's point that "'silver' is merely an accessory: probably
the new generations will think that 'silver' is the alternative to
'digital,'" sounds likely, tho I'd bet "old process work" (Lyle Rexer's
term) will continue strong... (I'd bet also, that even if "alt," that is,
our "alt," becomes mainstream, we'll still call it "alt.")

Lyle says: "'Art photography,' which has always held onto its modernist
idea of a distinct silver gelatin identity, is going to be hurt. Old
process work, on the other hand, fits into a broad conceptual framework,
as critique of materials."

Also, "Without a strong conceptual edge, silver work will become so
marginal, it will become an alt process, like a daguerreotype."

Quotes are from Jon Bailey's interview with Lyle in P-F #6. Lyle's book,
"The Antiquarian Avant-Garde, the New Wave in Old Process Photography,"
due from Abrams next year. To sample the flavor of that, and more, see my
next....

cheers,

Judy
