   Bee's wax tends to be sticky. Candle wax is mostly what is called
Paraffin wax in the US, a hard white wax used mostly for home preserving.
If you haven't cleaned inside the slots on the holder you might try that too.
  Most older dark slides are made of hard rubber of a type called Ebonite.
I've run into the same thing with some very old holders, I think its due
to the wood having warped a little.
