Presently coffee table books could be produced very well using a studio
level digital back, especially if it is on a 4x5 camera. But even on a
medium format, some of the newer backs capture enormous files. Coffee table
book images are not that big. A good 6 mega pixel camera can produce a very
nice 11x14 or even a 13x19 from a cheap inkjet printer, especially if it is
sharpened or interpolated with a fractals program. I was in Los Angeles a
few weeks ago at the Photoshop World Conference. Leaf had their digital
back there ($40,000 selling price). In their booth they had poster size
prints, probably 24"x36" or 40"x60" that were taken with their digital back.
These images were stunning; sharp, fine detail, no dots or bands, incredible
color saturation. I do not know what kind of prints they were, but my guess
is that they were printed onto photographic paper, possibly LightJet or
Direct digital. I do not know if a 4x5 piece of film enlarged to this size
would look as good. Really amazing. So I think that the coffee table book
is well within reason.
