The Nikon D-1 is a very rugged camera, albeit digital, designed for hard
use. It contains extra seals on the body and is pretty heavy from its metal
construction. If you are going to venture into the great wild, and you are
taking a digital camera, invest in an external battery pack. They are about
$50 and give you ten times the battery life of in camera batteries. There
are also several field image storage strategies available to download media
cards in the field so you can then reuse them. Digital may be a good option
for you because while you may give up some resolution you will know whether
you have the shot in the bag or not in a matter of a second or two. If you
are really concerned about the resolution thing get hold of the new Kodak
DCS-760, if they have hit the streets yet. It is a 35mm digital camera on a
Nikon F-5 body and has a 6 megapixel CCD in it which gives an 18 Mb file.
That should be plenty of resolution for you. It was said last year that 6
million pixels will be the benchmark equivalent to film. Let's see.
