Question about series versus single piece.

This is a little off topic but I trust the people on this list and my work
is alt process. Anyway, my question is about what a series is considered in
the following circumstance:

When applying to an academic program or some sort of "call for work"
competition, etc. and one of the requirements is 10-20 pieces, is a series
considered one piece or is each image a single piece?

I tend to work in diptychs, triptychs and sometimes more then 3 images to
portray a single idea. My issue is that when I do a series it's about a
single idea. So I do not have "Figure #1 - #7" type of series where each
might belong to a group but are their own identity. While each piece I do in
a series (I hope) can be on its own, the entire thought might be lost
without the rest.

Now when I am applying to something that requires 10-20 pieces would I count
each image or each idea? I've been in this dilemma before and decided that
each image, either in a series or not, was its own identity but now I am
starting to question that. Anyone have an opinion on this?
