These shows have both been discussed at length in the Times by folks with,
needless to say & of course, their own imperfections, but guaranteed more
knowledgeable & reliable photo wise than M. Perl, whom I would not trust
to tell me the Pope is Catholic.
For what it's worth, I'll add that I saw the Jewish Museum show, and found
alas that it was NOT worth the trip -- even from just 14th street. The
idea that Street Photography of NYC was Jewish is probably inarguable, but
the show didn't make that look like any great accomplishment. Familiar
photogs were NOT represented by stellar work,& we were given few
unfamiliar ones you could care about. The most interesting part, call it a
semi-surprise, for me was that the last room -- more recent color work --
was so lame. The earlier work, vintage, black & white or monochrome
(except for one fascinating early color print, process not stated) was far
stronger.
