Richard,
There are four methods:
1/ different paper
2/ use vinegar as a prewash as Shannon suggests
3/ double coat works with some papers
4/ delayed development - let it sit for 24 hours after exposure
before developing
Each of these gives a different effect. You should be able to work
with negatives with up to 1.8 density range.
