Actually Joe, with all due respect and welcome to new subscribers, it is
my opinion that for listeners in general, that is, someone who has not yet
CONTRIBUTED to list discussion to try to monitor it, is indeed out of
line, whether a new subscriber or old lurker. We're the content providers,
and you're the content consumer. But unlike the mass media, we're not
selling you to advertisers... your silent body has little value. If you
want better content, help provide. PLEASE !

However, besides being unearned, I feel this "policing" is harmful on
several levels... Most people cringe at being criticized, so a form of
self-criticism sets in: uh oh, I better not say that it might be off
topic.

Having been on this list, for better or worse, almost from day one, I
PROMISE you that some of the BEST most USEFUL, PRECIOUS and RARE
information does indeed arrive tangentially, or serendipitously, if you
will, from EXACTLY such meandering. And since this thread began as a joke,
do you hereby outlaw jokes? It's exactly the informal give & take that
has created many lasting colleagueships, even, I dare say, friendships.

Also, if you have read the archives, and if you haven't you owe it to
yourself and us to do so, not just be an easy rider, you'll see that more
and more of what we try and need and do involves digital. To prohibit
digital would be to prohibit one of the most important tools we have
received. And, if you accept digital, the crash is a real, and deepening
problem. But perhaps you thought my message crowded out some other more
important thing.... more staining in the highlights? How do I size for
gum? Is your modem too pokey for all? If not, then use the delete key
for the thread you find troubling...

But perhaps you have a question or comment you're eager to make and fear
being lost in the shuffle. The average shuffle around here is 30+ messages
a day. No guarantees, but often a repeat gets an answer.

So, if you have a question or comment to make, PLEASE DO. We're all eyes.

But PS. For what it's worth I got an offlist message from someone who's
had exactly the same scuzzy problem with exactly the set up I had. I
think the info I gave them might save 3 months of the kind of grief I've
endured (Apple Tech Support it seems STILL doesn't have a clue !!).
Wasn't that worth a little boredom on your part?

My own rule of thumb, BTW, is that when there are many responses that's a
sign of a need to discuss... Many of us find two lists too many, let
alone three, and the quality and connections here make it the best. Like
Alice's Restaurant, you can get everything you want...

And what do you want? Are you new to alt? Perhaps a special interest or
expertise or quest?

Judy
