Sandy,

We always used to do the wash before toning with several smallish
quantities of distilled water, mainly to avoid forming any more solid
silver salts in the paper from the chlorides etc in tap water, but it
probably also helped that distilled water is normally slightly acidic due
to a very small amount of dissolved carbon dioxide. This initial wash
water is worth adding to the silver residues container of course.
