Thanks to Larry and Robert for good responses.

I found a download site for the repair manual, It seems that the Epson 3000
does count ink discharges and guesstimates when the ink pad is full and
initiates a “service request”—the configuration of flashing lights described
in my initial post. Epson Tech Support couldn’t just tell me this, of
course—what with their Repair Depot Ethics, and all. AND the reset sequence
they gave me was erroneous.

Anyway, the repair manual set me back on the right path, and only set me
back 20 bucks. If anyone has need of a repair manual for the 3000 or a host
of other makes and models, let me know and I’ll post the URL.

A non-alt-process-list person, Jim Davis, was also very helpful in figuring
all this out. He has a web page detailing surgical procedures on the 3000,
complete with photos ( http://www.visual-artists.com/epson_3000.htm), and
other pages detailing post factory ink configurations. Jim was very
responsive to my plea for help.

Nick, if you’re out there—once I make sure everything is back in adjustment
and run some print orders with the ConeTech inks, I’ll be back on track
trying out the “new” Pictorico OHP film with OEM inks.

Thanks to all! Go easy.
