since cyanotype is self masking, I've had really good results with rice
paper--likely other thin papers would be fantastic as well, & the image will
remain only on the surface (though the emulsion will soak in & thru very
quickly), with a kind of ghostly effect once the paper dries. Nice as a
book, if you plan the pages to layer into each other.
My other choice is arches platine, which looks great (though I still think
we got a 1/2 to a full tone more with the rice paper).
Hien and I, when we did it, used only the citrate & ferricyanide (i.e. no
oxalic acid or dichromate).
cyanotype is always a little sticky once you get it into a hot contact
frame--no way around it, & no matter how dry it was to begin. Just try to
minimize the pooling, and unless it's not extremely flat in the frame, you
shouldn't have too much of a problem.
I had problems with blotchy platine too, come to think of it. I think I just
used the other side, but I could be wrong.
GOOD LUCK!
Kris

Subject: Quickee Cyanotype Question

I'm doing a cyanotype project this week and it's been
years since I've monkeyed w/this process.

My question is, using the formula below, (unless I
hear otherwise), what is the best/favorite paper using
brush application? At this moment I'm testing Platine
since I have that in the lab, but the first test was
kinda poopy, (i.e. weak shadows, blotchy).

I am changing the length of time the sensitizer sets
before using the hair dryer to see if that helps.
Also, it's a hot steamy day here in Chicago but have
AC in the lab and I'm using sunlight to expose these.

Thanks for any and all help!

Eric Nelson

Solution A:
Ferric Ammonium Citrate 27.2 gm
Oxalic Acid .5
Water to make 100 ml

Solution B:
Potassium Ferricyanide 9.2 gm
Oxalic Acid .5 gm
Ammonium Dichromate 0.2 gm
Water to make 100 ml
