To all,

I use Liquitex Gesso as a paper sizing only. I mix it 1:1 and paint on the
paper. As Gesso has a rough tooth, the gum emulsion adheres to the paper
quite well. I would not recommend using Gesso over any image unless the
image needs to be hidden. Gesso is opaque even in a diluted state.
I have also used Liquitex Matte Medium as a size between layers of gum. That
was a disaster... While it dries clear it does create the Teflon effect
described in the original post. I have used a layer of heated gelatin
successfully however. The gelatin - mixed as per the original paper size
recommended in most publications - is just lightly brushed onto the paper.
The emulsion is then painted and exposed and developed with your normal
technique.
As with everything gum, practice, practice, practice.
