nu arc mat

I didn't like the original mat -- if you mean the one with the hard
rubbery pimples -- and covered it early on with a heavy black vinyl, a
smooth mat-surface black on the one side, a sturdy woven fabric of some
kind on the other.  Since the vacuum only comes through the one hole I
just cut that hole in the vinyl. The advantage, besides not putting
dimples in my prints (in a couple of cases for some reason permanently
marking the negative), is it's removed so easily for cleaning.

I never could figure out why they made the mat that way, though presumably
there was a reason...

I use a cutoff from it on top of my light table... and may even possibly
have a leftover scrap around somewhere -- If I do, I can send it to you to
show what I'm talking about, although I imagine many materials would do as
well.  This one came, if memory serves, from the rubber store on Canal
Street.
