It's optional really - and depends on the effects one desires.

My results vary widely, especially from one place to the next.  If the first
run through the mordancage floats the emulsion effectively - and the results
are pleasing - then fine!  I try to make it clear to participants that one
can stop in this process whenever the results please.  The working notes are
really just a point of departure.
