Actually, I believe the primary reason to avoid changes in temperature
and humidity is physical. In conservation these changes are often
referred to as "cycling." Rapid changes in humidity and/or
temperature can cause materials to crack, separate from backing, etc.
Rapid cycling, will over time cause the materials to deteriorate
faster than if they had not been cycled or had been cycled slowly.
This is the reason materials that are removed from cold storage are
brought up to temperature slowly rather than quickly.
